I wanted to replace the brake pads on my 2018 Honda CRV as it approaches 70K. I'm looking for a reputable auto shop, and Hoover Street Auto Repair is very close to my office. They also have a great reviews. I spoke with Cody, and he asked me to bring the car in for free inspection. What I really like from this shop is they provide images from their inspection and Cody was very friendly and helpful. The brake pads still have 5 mm and 6 mm of life left, so there is no need for replacement. I will definitely come back to see them when the brakes are worn out.

Oh my gosh! These guys are fabulous. I got stranded on a road trip, and these guys squeezed me in same day! So, so nice. Can’t say enough wonderful things about them. Great realistic advice about what fix to prioritize, great customer service, and such a thorough job (Thanks especially to Scott! You rock!)

I could not be more impressed with the customer service we received from the folks at Hoover Street Auto. My daughter is a student in Ann Arbor and they have helped her with two vehicles. They truly had her best interest in mind and treated her with respect and kindness every time she visited. To top it all off, they saved me money! If I could give more than 5 stars, I absolutely would. Thank you!!

Hoover Street auto repair was a fantastic experience. Cody got my son's car right in and quickly came up with an estimate that seemed very fair and reasonable, and then quickly worked to repair it. I can't say enough good things about Hoover Street auto repair and Cody and the team.

The staff here are awesome! Unfortunately I had to send my car to a dealership because of anti-theft codes. Cody helped me every step of the way and went above and beyond. If you want a comfortable, honest, fast working shop, this is the place to go!

Saved my birthday and exam grade! On the way to an engineering exam at UofM, my car's exhaust resonator rusted apart and fell off. I Googled the closest auto shop and drove straight to Hoover Street Auto Repair. Unfortunately, it was my birthday and my wife had planned a party for me later that day (back home), which is 2.5 hours from Ann Arbor. I needed to get my car fixed, take my exam, and get home for my birthday! Despite having a long list of cars to work on, the guys at Hoover Street Auto drove my car onto a lift right after I pulled in to take a look. Meanwhile, the folks in the front office had ordered and paid for a ride to my class since they overheard me tell one of their employees I was needing to get to an exam. They informed me my ride was arriving in 5 minutes, and I ended up being early to my test! Shortly after taking my exam, I received a call back stating what was wrong and what needed to be replaced/fixed. They proceeded to send photos and videos of nearly every part of my car that they inspected, including things I didn't ask (or pay) for. This was a time they could have skipped past the nuanced inspection items, but instead they informed of things to look out for, and got the job done quickly and effectively. Better yet, I gave them the green light from the beginning to replace an engine mount I thought was bad. Something they could have easily gone ahead and done, cashing out on the fact I told them from the beginning to replace it. After their inspection they informed me they didn't believe the engine mount was bad, and that I need not spend money on it. There were multiple parts of this experience they could've easily upcharged me, and instead they were quick, efficient, and very transparent. I would 100% recommend their services for anyone in the area. Besides the quality work, they were extremely friendly, helpful, and had overall great customer service.

Horrible prices. They charged me $200 for diagnostics and then tried to charge me $1,300 to replace coils and plugs. Called a few other autoshops and got my coils/plugs replaced for $400 somewhere else. Not sure if it's because I'm a woman, but they tried to push a bunch of unnecessary services like a battery replacement and oil change, even though my oil wasn't changed that long ago and my battery was just replaced last year. I would never go here again.

Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Was able to get my daughter’s car in and diagnosed very quickly. Ed was exceptional at explaining the problems and offered very fair pricing on all needed repairs. Highly recommend doing business at Hoover Street Auto Repair!!!

Squawking/squealing brakes and I was sure I'd have to spend a lot, but no! Hoover got me right in as a new customer. Checked it out thoroughly and... NO CHARGE! They took photos of the brakes from various angles and said the sound was probably more rust or a sheen that collects sometimes. Super nice team there.

You'll see it a million times in these reviews, but cody is an absolute gem. Honest, helpful, kind, he was a pleasure to work with. I took my car in because of some electronic failures. The electrical inspection felt a bit expensive ($220, and it was done in under an hour) but they were kind enough to inspect the brakes and undercarriage for free when I asked. I really appreciated the detailed inspection notes and photos, and felt that I got an honest assessment of what was urgent and what wasn't by one of their representatives, Ed. Ultimately they quoted me $1300 dollars to replace the alternator and battery. I was blown away by this price, especially considering that a new duralast alternator and battery for my car costs ~$450 dollars at autozone with a lifetime and 3 year warranty respectively. After a bit of research I discovered that replacing the alternator is a relatively simple job that most mechanics can finish in under an hour assuming all goes well. It was such a simple job, just a matter of unplugging a few things, unscrewing 3 bolts, loosening a belt, swapping the alternator and putting everything back together. So I went back in to retrieve the car to do the repairs myself and ran into Cody. I told him about what was going on and he took the time to justify the ~$800 labor charge on a 1-2 hour job. He explained that liability, the potential for the job to be extended by unforeseen issues with the car, and the guarantees/warranties included in their services all factor in to their labor costs. I thanked him for the reasonable explanation but said there was no way I could agree to such a cost for a simple job. He was extremely understanding and said it was definitely possible to do at home if I was careful, and that if anything went wrong I could always bring it back to the shop for the repair. That honesty was huge when there was an incentive to be dishonest and discourage me from doing the job. He then agreed to jumpstart my car so I could take it home. I ultimately got the job done in a couple of hours for a grand total of $500 including some tools I had to purchase. This shop was expensive and I was very soured on them to begin with. Knowing I can trust someone at Hoover street auto is the only reason I would go back or recommend them to anyone. Plenty of mechanics will weaponize your lack of industry experience to make their services seem necessary. Cody kept it real. I hope he gets the recognition he deserves at a HSA, any shop would be lucky to have him.

A great shop to take your care to, and use them for all my car needs. Great with trying to get you in as soon as they can and willing to work with you. Have been great with not trying to overcharge, but giving the information you need for what’s wrong with the vehicle. The past experience with fixing a problem much quicker than expected, and finding a way to fix a problem that was $2000 less than the estimate shows that they care about their customers. Highly recommended and where I go with all my car needs

Efficient, kind, and they do great work! Thought I needed a new alternator on a tight timeline. Brought my car here in a panic and they got me in way faster than anyone else in the area. I got a call a few hours later (even sooner than they had said they would be able to look at my car) telling me that I didn't need a new alternator at all. They 100% could have sold me on an expensive service that I didn't need, and I would have been none the wiser. They instead diagnosed the actual problem (with a far cheaper fix), and checked over everything else to make sure the car was safe and ready for my road trip that weekend. Forever recommending this place to the other grad students in my program as an excellent place to get your car serviced! Thanks y'all!!!

My sister's car came limping into town from Pennsylvania with a transmission issue, and needed quick repair. I phoned 3 other repair shops, none of whom would take us on short notice. The third place recommended Hoover St, and we are so glad they did! We were greeted kindly, kept updated with details of the repair, charged a conservative price, and had her car back in motion by the time she needed to leave. I highly recommend HSAE to anyone searching for a reliable repair shop. Thank you, thank you, to all involved!

Oh my gosh these guys are great! I was on a trip looking forward to vacation and my transmission suddenly started acting weird (when I hit the accelerator the engine just spun, wouldn't catch). My sister called four places until Hoover St Auto said they could take me in, and I cannot rave enough about them. They informed me of all that my old car needed, but when I agreed to what would just get me back home, they were fine with that and did not push me for more. They took pics of everything, explained it in simple terms (even though I'm female 😊) and were entirely respectful and professional. Best of all, it was fixed in two days for only $529, VERY reasonably! I recommend them highly, and am very grateful for their expertise

I was driving up to Ann Arbor (an hour away from where I live) to see my niece at UofM Children's Hospital and as soon as I got off of the highway, my car would stall any time I tried to drive forward. I was able to get towed to Abbot Street Auto and be seen the same day. They were very honest with me about the new transmission my old car would need and even tried to get me a better price on what the transmission would cost. When I decided that I would not be paying twice what I paid for the car to fix the transmission I didn't have to pay anything for the diagnostics and they helped me get the car scrapped and made the entire process much easier and less stressful than it could have been.

I received exceptional customer service today from the folks at Hoover Street Auto Repair. On a 19* F day, I was dismayed to learn that my car heater wasn't working. Some quick Googling suggested a coolant fluid top-off as a potential cheap option, so I dropped off my car at HSAR on my way to work. They diagnosed the issue as far more problematic and encouraged me to take advantage of my (fairly new) vehicle's warranty for the repair, without charging me a cent. They were kind, thorough, honest, and professional throughout (special thank-yous to Cody and Kris for their assistance). Although I ended up not needing anything done today, if I ever do in the future, I will absolutely be back.

There is nothing more telling than a positive review of a business that did nothing more than be incredibly honest, genuine, and helpful. That is precisely why I’m giving a shoutout to Hoover Street Auto — and Cody, in particular. Bravo. Our old Toyota minivan is nearing the end of its life, but I wanted to ensure it was safe for my son, a recent Michigan graduate, to drive. At other shops — including the dealership — all we heard about was fees, possible repair costs, and how busy they were. People were short and uninterested. Cody and Hoover Auto were different. Cody asked thoughtful questions about the car, driving practices, and expectations for keeping the vehicle. The team dug into the problems, provided a comprehensive report, and even double-checked other issues. They kept the car overnight, tested it on the highway the next morning, and Cody called me personally with his thoughts. Most strikingly, he was honest enough to say the possible repairs might not solve the problem — a first for me. Ultimately, we decided to save the money for a down payment on a newer car. Not only did we spend nothing on the diagnosis, but Cody refused payment for all the time he spent texting and calling me. Few businesses operate like Hoover Auto. I dread dealing with repair shops, but I’ve found one I can trust — and I will return when I need help again. Cody, thank you for your time, patience, honesty, and willingness to simply listen and talk about an old car. Since you refused to accept any payment, I’m sharing my gratitude here for others to see. With appreciation, Matthew

We unfortunately had some issues with our transmission. Living 45 minutes away, the shop was extremely accommodating. They do not BS and genuinely want what is best for the customer. Cody is absolutely fantastic and would highly recommend. Also, the free inspection saved us. We are very thankful for this shop.

Seriously could not recommend an auto service more. Hoover St. has been nothing but amazing for me. They have been generous and flexible with me as a student, and that goes a long way. They run specials on oil changes which make it such a great deal noting that it comes with a free courtesy inspection! These things make me not want to go anywhere else.
