I reached out to this company to inquire whether they serviced SUVs. I am currently working with a client looking to secure a year-long contract with a qualified vendor. Unfortunately, all I was able to do was give my name and ask if they serviced SUVs, as I did not see that service listed on their website. The owner’s first response was, “Yes, we service SUVs, but we do not offer discounts,” and then he hung up in my face. Not wanting to assume that was intentional, I called back and politely explained that I wasn’t sure whether the call was disconnected. He was very short and said, “I am not interested.” And hung up in my face again! I work with organizations around the world, and I have never experienced an owner behaving in this manner. He never allowed me the opportunity to explain that we were looking to secure a year-long contract with his business. His immediate assumption that I was calling for a discount was especially concerning, and it raised questions about the bias behind that assumption. Unlike what he may have presumed, we were prepared to pay his full price, but not at the expense of professionalism. This is not how owners should treat potential customers, and if they lack the capacity to handle calls professionally, they should have someone else answer the phone.
